Members of the MIX 101.5 staff recently visited the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle headquarters and farm in preparation for their annual BackPack Buddies Food Drive on Thursday, August 23, 2012. The group toured the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle warehouse, classrooms and the full-service kitchen where volunteers teach homeless men and women how to prepare healthy meals for food banks and soup kitchens around the region. In addition, they were able to see where all of the BackPack Buddies donations end up; in backpacks by the truck load, heading out to kids who are already in year-round school.
While at the farm, MIX employees watched as volunteers from Wisconsin harvested vegetables, tended the fields and created piles of topsoil which is sold to area farms and donated to inner city gardens where the existing soil may be polluted by lead and other carcinogens.
The beginning stages of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s goat and chicken farms were also on full display, both of which will lead the expansion of the farm’s livestock
The BackPack Buddies Food Drive will take place Thursday, August 23rd from 6am-6pm at Crabtree Valley Mall (in front of Macy’s) in Raleigh, and Crossroads Plaza (in front of Old Navy) in Cary. Donations of food and funds will be accepted at both locations. Click here for more information about the event plus a list of acceptable items.
