99.9 The Fan’s Joe Ovies is sporting a Groucho Marx look for a good cause in November.

99.9 The Fan Sports Talk Host Joe Ovies is sporting a new moustache.   He’s not just trying to keep up with the Duck Dynasty guys, he’s embarking on a mission to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer as part of Movember.

Movember calls itself a movement that encourages men to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November.  Participants fundraise throughout the month, hoping to start conversations as they go from a clean-shaven face on November 1st to a new moustache by the end of the month.

“With their new moustaches, these Mo Bros bring much needed awareness to men’s health issues by prompting conversations wherever they go,” says Movember organizers.

Ovies has been participating all month.

“I decided to grow out the mustache against my better judgment!” said Ovies.

Ovies joined the Carolina Hurricanes team and is hoping to raise $500.

“I decided to hop on the Movember bandwagon after a family member and a friend each went through a testicular cancer scare in the last year,” he said.  “For my friend, they caught it after a tennis injury and immediately took him to surgery to remove the cancer and proceed with radiation treatments. He’s handling the treatments well and monitoring the possibility of it spreading, but he appears to be in the clear.”

“Frankly speaking, the possibility prostate and testicular cancer is something that doesn’t register for plenty of guys,” Ovies continued.  “It’s not so much the ‘tough guy’ routine; we’re just absent minded about it.”

He’s happy to be participating.

“With Movember, it’s a fun way to bring awareness and raise some money,” said Ovies.  “So when I get the ‘What’s up with the creepy ‘stache, Joe?’ question, I’m more than happy to direct them to the website.”
