“I was coming home with a new bruise every day.” These are the words of a student who endured merciless bullying at school. Nearly 30 percent of students in middle and high school experience bullying. A new 30-minute television special produced by WRAL-TV takes an in-depth look at bullying and what schools and communities are doing about it. “Stand Up, Speak Out, Stop Bullying” airs Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. on WRAL-TV, then again at 7:30 p.m. on FOX 50. The program is hosted by WRAL News anchor Jackie Hyland.
“Stand Up, Speak Out, Stop Bullying” was produced in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as part of its Character Matters Anti-Bullying Campaign. “The entire Character Matters initiative is focused on building ethical leadership among young people and helping to shape the culture in our schools and communities where students and adults feel safe and respected,” said NC State Superintendent June Atkinson.
Capitol Broadcasting Company (WRAL/FOX 50) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction partnered to create the Character Matters Anti-Bullying Campaign to help spread the word about the enduring problem of bullying.
“Creating safer schools involves educating and informing students, parents and the community about the importance of anti-bullying efforts,” said WRAL-TV Vice President and General Manager Steven D. Hammel. “I’m very pleased to use our station resources to partner with the NCDPI on this important campaign.”
Vice President and General Manager of FOX 50/WRAZ-TV Tommy Schenck agrees. “This is a very serious issue that is on a marked rise in our schools and via social media. If we can help empower our youth to speak up, use TV and our other digital platforms to say it is OK to talk, and provide families in our local communities with proven tools to aid in bully prevention, we can do a lot to start turning this problem around.”
