WRAL-TV’s David Crabtree, Mandy Mitchell Honored by the N.C. Association of Broadcasters

The North Carolina Association of Broadcasters (NCAB) honored two WRAL-TV journalists at its Annual Convention on June 24, 2014. The awards were determined by a panel of out of state media executives.

David Crabtree

WRAL-TV Anchor David Crabtree

David Crabtree, longtime WRAL-TV anchor, won the award for BEST NEWS ANCHOR in the state. Crabtree’s award winning segment included WRAL-TV’s coverage of the Boston marathon bombing, reporting live from Vatican City on the announcement and installation of the Pope, and reporting live from South Africa on the death and funeral of Nelson Mandela.

“I thought I would be at WRAL three years when I first came to North Carolina. June 6 was my twenty-year anniversary,” said Crabtree after accepting the award. “I am humbled and privileged to be a broadcaster and a journalist and I thank you.”

Mandy Mitchell

WRAL-TV Sports Anchor Mandy Mitchell

WRAL-TV sports reporter Mandy Mitchell won in the OUTSTANDING SPORTS STORY OR SERIES category for her story titled “Creed Sellers,” which focused on a boy diagnosed with cancer and his love for baseball.

“It’s a privilege to work at a station that not only values storytelling but encourages storytelling,” said Mitchell. “It’s nice to be recognized for a story that meant so much to the people involved.”

“It’s certainly an honor to win two of the four television awards,” said WRAL News Director Rick Gall. “David Crabtree had an extraordinary year as an anchor, traveling to Rome for the selection of a new Pope and to South Africa following the death of Nelson Mandela. Mandy Mitchell’s touching story on a youth baseball team rallying around a boy diagnosed with cancer was remarkable.”
