Hoda Kotb, Ed Wilson & Renee Chou
WRAL-TV’s Ed Wilson and WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou (right) catch a selfie with The Today Show’s Hoda Kotb in Rio.

They had a rough road to Rio, but the WRAL-TV team covering the 2016 Summer Olympic action in Brazil is having a mountain-top adventure that more than makes up for lost luggage and a multi-day journey.  WRAL-TV Anchor/Reporters Debra Morgan, Renee Chou and Jeff Gravley with WRAL-TV Photojournalists Brad Simmons, Ed Wilson and Keith Baker are bringing back live action and a bevy stories from Rio each day on WRAL-TV.  The team is also posting constantly on social media.

From a hike up to the Christ the Redeemer statue to sitting by Ryan Held’s family as he won gold in the Men’s 4×100 relay, the WRAL-TV Rio Team is covering every angle of the Olympics for WRAL viewers back home.

Here are some of the photos and comments they’ve shared since they arrived in Rio and got to work:

From WRAL-TV’s Debra Morgan: The Christ the Redeemer statute is amazing and the fog made it so serene this morning.
WRAL-TV Rio Team
From WRAL-TV’s Debra Morgan: We went up 215 of the famous Selaron Steps in Rio to take this picture in front of the Brazilian flag made out of tiles. Whew! Most of the tiles here are from all over the world – we even found a little bit of home when we spotted the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse!
Renee Chou
From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: Living out my fantasy as an Olympic line judge!

From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: Rode the Olympic bus to another Olympic zone north of Barra Olympic Park. What I saw from my window!
Renee Chou
From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: Having a great time talking with athletes from North Carolina! I spoke with two paddlers on the US Mens’ canoe/kayak team. First picture is of Casey Eichfeld, competing in his 3rd Olympics at age 26. The other is kayaker Michal Smolen, 22, in his first Olympics. They live and train in Charlotte. They are both in the semis! I’m in awe of their dedication, athleticism and positive attitude. Go Team USA!!!!!

From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: NBC lost power to its live shot location building right at 6 a.m. for about 20 minutes. No way to broadcast a live picture from Rio to Raleigh, so I did a live report via phone instead!

From WRAL-TV’s Debra Morgan: One of the best things I’ve been able to experience as a reporter! Spent the evening with Ryan Held’s family during his gold medal race. Absolutely amazing!! And Ryan’s emotion during the ceremony – I cried right along with him. So proud!!
Ryan Held
From WRAL-TV’s Jeff Gravley: My assignment Sunday was to follow the progress of NC State swimmer Ryan Held in the 4X100 relay. He did really well in the AM prelims and was the only one from the AM swim to be selected for the finals. That’s when he got to team up with Michael Phelps. Held and the USA team win gold!! What an event to see and get the chance to interview Ryan after.

Ed Wilson
From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: Shout-out to the unsung hero of Team Rio, the man behind the camera, chief photographer Edward Wilson, lugging 70 pounds of equipment through Rio, and shooting great stuff! Every so often, he lets me carry the tripod, but no question he is doing all the heavy-lifting while I get the on-air credit. There is no TV without Ed. Just 13 more days to go!
Hoda Kotb, Ed Wilson & Renee Chou
From WRAL-TV’s Renee Chou: Met up with the fabulous Hoda Kotb on the set of the Today Show at Copacabana Beach! Love, love, love Hoda! You often wonder how TV people are in real life… And Hoda is warm, genuine, funny– the kind of person you want to hang out with for hours and hours because they’re so personable and real.
