On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, 100 golfers hit the links with CBC’s Sports Radio Stations. Presented by The Jim Allen Group, the 3rd Annual Sports Radio Open took over River Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh for a day of fun that also meant a boost for the Helene Foundation.
CBC’s Sports Radio stations 99.9 The Fan (WCMC-FM), Buzz Sports Radio (96.5 FM, 99.3 FM, 620AM, 99.2HD2) and The Ticket (95.7FM, 1550AM, 99.9HD3) all hosted the two-man superball formatted event.
“The weather forecast leading up the event wasn’t looking very promising,” said 99.9 The Fan Local Sales Manager Tim Brady. “But it ended up being a perfect day for golf…overcast and mid 70’s. The folks from the Helene Foundation were so appreciative of our efforts. The got a big check and a ton of radio and digital branding for their charity.”
The day began with a Duck Donuts breakfast as the golfers checked in. After a welcome ceremony and rules recap, the event got off to shot gun start at 9am. City Barbeque provided lunch during the awards ceremony. The fun included the giant check presentation to the Helene Foundation, as well as raffle prize drawings.
A portion of the day’s proceeds benefited the Helene Foundation, a non-profit that provides immediate support for mothers fighting cancer to positively impact their families. Since the Helene Foundation was founded in 2009, the organization has assisted 140 families and touched the lives of more than 300 children.
“It was a great event as always and I got to do all my favorite things that day,” said 99.9 The Fan Producer/Board Operator Alec Campbell. “Started out the day in the gym, then played golf and then talked on the radio for 4 hours. My golf game wasn’t as polished as I wanted it to be but thank God for my partner, Lauren Brownlow, who saved us with some of her tee shots. I had absolutely no idea where the golf ball was going off the tee. We did manage to make 2 birdies and an eagle on the day, which was encouraging. Either way, it’s always fun to get out and engage with the listeners and some of the great supporters of the show and 99.9 The Fan.”
99.9 The Fan Promotion Director Justina Kruser, a brand new addition to the stations’ staff, heaped praise on the Open as well.
“With this being my first official event with sports radio since I started, I was nervous yet determined to pull it off,” said Kruser. “I thought the event went very well. We ended up being able to donate $5,642 to the Helene Foundation which is such a great feeling! I can’t wait to start planning the 4th Annual Sports Radio Open.”
