The 2nd class of Capitol Broadcasting’s Emerging Leaders Program, a collaboration with Leadership Triangle, began with an onboarding of the student interns on Monday, August 14, 2023, at CBC’s Western Blvd headquarters. Eleven students, rising juniors and seniors, from three local universities, NC Central, Shaw and St. Augustine’s, were selected to participate.
Last fall CBC and Leadership Triangle teamed up to create the program, partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to support emerging talent from our local HBCUs.
“This program is one of several ways we are building bridges and deepening partnerships with universities to identify and develop emerging talent,” said Corp VP of Social Responsibility Loretta Harper-Arnold at the outset of the inaugural year of the program.
Over the next few months each of CBC’s larger divisions will host at least one intern. Students were selected for work in CBC subsidiaries including the Durham Bulls, Microspace, American Underground, WRAL Digital, WRAL-TV and CBC Radio in marketing, HR, web content, news, sales and more.
While the students began in mid-August, CBC managers have been preparing since May to receive the interns and best mentor and provide learning opportunities for them.
Leadership Triangle prepared CBC managers for interviews and hiring the interns, as well as teaching the managers about onboarding, and providing equitable feedback. Now that the program is off and running, CBC’s managers will complete one more training with Leadership Triangle, to put the CBC employees in the best position to benefit this class of interns.
Each student is assigned to a staff member, working 20 hours per week.
“The interns meet every Wednesday with Leadership Triangle to receive training on various topics like leadership values, time management, courageous conversations, decision-making, trust and high-performing teams, and so on,” explained Corp Learning & Development Manager Michele Pendergraft.
The program also includes a retreat led by Leadership Triangle in late September, which will be held at the River & Twine, the tiny home hotel at Rocky Mount Mills.
The program will run through December 13, when the students will officially become Goodmon Fellows.
“During their onboarding, we had representatives from each division come to share about what they do and how they fit into the overall CBC picture,” said Pendergraft. “We also got them set up on their computers and filled them in on CBC Policies that they were required to abide by.”
