Recently retired WRAL-TV Sports Anchor Tom Suiter, shown here on the set of Football Friday, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Greater Raleigh Sports Council Evening of Champions. |
Duke Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, here working the phone lines for MIX 101.5’s Radiothon, will be honored with the CBC Sports Person of the Year Award. |
CBC sponsored the award which honors Coach K. Now in his 29th year leading the Blue Devils, Coach K is a Hall of Famer and 12-time National Coach of the Year. He has coached the Duke team to three national championships, two back-to-back, as the all-time winningest coach at the University.
Suiter retired from WRAL-TV in December after 37 years at the sports desk. Outside of his excellence in sports reporting for a variety of events from NCAA Championships to NASCAR races, Suiter is known for his Football Friday Show & Extra Effort Award. The half-hour Football Friday show evolved from Suiter’s coverage of high school sports on WRAL-TV. And his Extra Effort Award has honored many area high school athletes over the years.
The Durham Bulls are also sponsoring an award during the evening, the Courage & Character Award. CBC’s sports radio station 99.9 The Fan is table sponsor for the Evening of Champions. The Awards Celebration on March 5 honors local athletes, coaches, teams, and community members for their excellence in sports and their positive impact on the community.
The Evening of Champions celebrates the Triangle’s professional and amateur teams, athletes, special events and fans. The evening consists of a silent auction, awards presentation, video countdown of top sports moments, and live interviews. East Carolina University head football coach Skip Holtz will deliver the keynote address.
The event will take place from 5-9pm at Embassy Suites in Cary.
