WRAL-TV has been a part of the Explorer Post program through the Boy Scouts of America for over three decades, since CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon’s first days as president of CBC. Recently Learning for Life honored Goodmon with a national award for exceptional support of the Explorer Post Program.
Goodmon received the William H. Spurgeon, III Award at the National Learning for Life Conference on Saturday, March 4, 2006 in Irving, Texas. CBC Vice President of Community Relations Paul Pope attended the event and accepted the award on Goodmon’s behalf.
Created in 1971, the William H. Spurgeon, III Award honors individuals who have rendered outstanding leadership to the Explorer Post program either as an Explorer Post adult leader or as a district, division, or council Exploring adult volunteer. Spurgeon, a business executive at the Irvine Company in Southern California, organized many special interest posts in the 1960’s. Spurgeon served as a member of the National Council Executive Board and national Exploring Committee, and his pioneering efforts lead to the present contemporary Exploring Program. The award was created one year after his death in 1970.
CBC now hosts two Explorer Post programs: Post 5 at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, and Post 50 at WRAZ-TV/FOX 50 in Durham. Post 5 students work on learning the ropes of television production at the WRAL studios. Post 50 students produce the live closed-circuit broadcast of the Durham Bulls’ home games on WRAZ-DT, FOX 50’s digital channel.
