The International League has announced that three Durham Bulls were named to the International League All-Star team. The IL All-Stars will take on the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 12 at Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens. First Baseman Kevin Witt was elected to the team as a starter, while Catcher Shawn Riggans and Shortstop B.J. Upton were selected as reserves.
As of late June, Witt leads the International League in home runs with 19, and is second in RBI with 53. He also ranks third in the league with a .557 slugging percentage.
Upton makes the All-Star squad for the second consecutive season. He currently leads the International League with 30 stolen bases, and is hitting .264 with five home runs and 31 RBI.
Shawn Riggans is one of three catchers named to the team, along with Carlos Ruiz of Scranton and Carlos Mendez of Richmond. Riggans is hitting .304 this season with seven home runs and 33 RBI.
The starters represent the leading vote-getters from ballots submitted by members of the media, field managers and general managers, and online fan voting. Nearly 900,000 votes were cast by fans for this year’s All-Stars.
This will be the ninth consecutive year that the International League and the Pacific Coast League will face off in the Triple-A All-Star Game. The PCL won last year’s game 11-5, giving them a 5-3 advantage overall.
