Five Durham Bulls Named to USA World Cup Team
|
The Durham Bulls recognized five members of the 2005 team who will represent the United States at the 2005 IBAF World Cup in The Netherlands in a pre-game ceremony prior to the Sunday, August 28th 5pm game. Bulls infielders Brooks Badeaux and Josh Phelps, outfielders Jeff Deardorff and Trenidad Hubbard and pitcher Jason Phillips were named to the squad.
The USA roster will be made up of professional, non 40-man roster players of the 30 Major League Baseball organizations. This is the fifth time USA Baseball has utilized Major-League affiliated professional players for international competition, following the 1999 Pan Am Games, the 2000 Olympic Games, the 2001 World Cup and the 2003 Olympic Qualifier.

Brooks Badeaux, a native of Lafayette, La., is in his fifth season as a Durham Bull. He batted .236 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 63 games this year. On August 18, 2004, Badeaux recorded five hits against Toledo, becoming the first Bulls player to have a five-hit game since 2000. Badeaux is one of seven Bulls who played on back-to-back International League title teams in 2002-2003. |

In his first season as a Bull, Josh Phelps has hit 13 homers and driven in 31 runs in 54 games for Durham. The Anchorage, AK native began the 2005 season with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays where he hit .266 with five home runs, 10 doubles and 26 RBI in 47 games. Phelps split the 2004 season between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cleveland Indians, batting a combined .251 with 17 home runs and 61 RBI in 103 games. In 2003, he set career highs in home runs (20) and RBI (66), appearing in 119 games for the Blue Jays. |

Outfielder Jeff Deardorff is currently batting .250 with 15 home runs and 41 RBI in 96 games in his first season as a Bull. Deardorff, a Michigan City, In. native, spent the 2004 season with the Columbus Clippers where he had a career-high 76 RBI to go along with 18 home runs and a .271 batting average. |

Trenidad Hubbard, who was born in Chicago, IL, was signed as a free agent and assigned to Durham on July 20 after starting the 2005 season with the Iowa Cubs of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. The 39-year old outfielder has been invited to the Triple-A All-Star Game four times. |

Right-handed pitcher Jason Phillips is 3-5 with a 5.67 ERA for the Bulls this season. After starting 13 games for Durham, Phillips was moved to the bullpen where has allowed an earned run in only four of 16 relief appearances. He had his best Triple-A season in 2003, going 10-1 with a 2.12 ERA for Buffalo. In November of 2001, the Williamsport, Pa. native was 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA for Team USA. |
The World Cup is the largest official international baseball event for the 2005 calendar year and will take place September 2-17 in The Netherlands. Team USA will be managed by 1986 World Champion New York Mets skipper Davey Johnson and will compete in Pool B against Australia, Colombia, Chinese Taipei, Greece, Japan, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua and Spain.
