Marjorie Fletcher 1913 – 2004 |
Sadly, CBC has lost a member of the extended CBC family. Marjorie Fletcher, widow of former CBC president, Fred Fletcher, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2004, at the age of 91.
As has been inherent in the Fletcher family over the years, Mrs. Fletcher was a tireless leader in many local and statewide community events throughout her lifetime.
Born August 31, 1913, Marjorie Irene Lempke, she earned a degree in Physical Education from the University of Illinois. While working at the Chicago YMCA after graduation, she met Fred Fletcher. The two married and relocated to Chapel Hill where Fred finished a degree at the university. They then moved to Raleigh where Fred began work for Capitol Broadcasting Company and WRAL-AM radio while Marjorie traveled eastern North Carolina establishing youth recreation programs.
Fred & Marjorie Fletcher were married for 63 years before his death in 2000. |
Her resume of community involvement included many leadership positions in organizations such as the Raleigh Jr. Women’s Club and in various PTAs. She established the Parent Youth League at Daniels Jr. High. Working closely with other parents, clergy and school administrators, she was instrumental in establishing voluntary standards for student conduct for school dances and dating. Later in life her creative endeavors expanded to include painting.
At the time of her death she lived at the Stewart Health Center at Springmoor in north Raleigh. Fred Fletcher, Marjorie Fletcher’s husband of 63 years, died of cancer in 2000.
The family received friends on Tuesday, September 7th, from 7-9pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary’s Street. A funeral service will be held at Ridge Road Baptist Church, Wednesday, September 8th at 1:30pm.
