Tift Merritt Guest on MIX 101.5 With Jim Kelly |
Local singer/songwriter Tift Merritt performs in the MIX studios. |
Local artist, Tift Merritt, was a recent guest on MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM with Jim Kelly and Vanna Fox, stopping by the studio on Tuesday, August 31, 2004. Merritt is back in Raleigh after the release of her new album, Tambourine, on Lost Highway Records.
She played a two night show the previous weekend at Cat’s Cradle with her band to help kick off her new release.
Merritt’s beauty and charm was ever present as she serenaded Kelly, Fox, and MIX Listeners with a live rendition of “Stray Paper” from Tambourine. MIX Listeners also got to hear “Good Hearted Man”, the first cut off of the new album.

In the August 20-27, 2004, issue of Entertainment Weekly, reporter Chris Willman had this to say about the native North Carolinian – “Maybe ‘Al in Memphis’ is even more apropos, given the mostly upbeat nature of a set that mixes rousing R&B horns with Heartbreaker Mike Campbell’s understated guitar. Merritt’s voice is a magical combination of cool reserve and effortless warmth; when she serenades a ‘Good Hearted Man,’ you suspect he’s getting a pretty grand ticker in return.” The article ends with Tift Merritt’s Tambourine receiving an A-. The album is available in stores now.
You can listen to Tift Merritt again on September 19th, as she will be co-hosting Homegrown Mix with Jim Kelly. At 9pm on MIX, Kelly and Merritt will feature local and regional recording artists with Merritt playing a little ditty or two of her own. Be sure to tune in!
