Durham Officials Approve Parking Facilities Adjacent To American Tobacco
The Lucky Strike Smokestack & Tower will remain fixtures at the center of the 16-acree campus. |
Monday night, April 28, 2003, the Durham City Council and County Commissioners approved using public funds to finance the construction of two parking decks on and around the American Tobacco property. The downtown property is currently undergoing renovation and construction by Capitol Broadcasting Company.
The vote dedicates more than $43 million to building the garages. Once complete, the complex will bring about 3,600 jobs and strives to ignite a revival of downtown Durham. Anchor tenants for the 16-acre campus include Duke University, Glaxo Smith-Kline, Compuware and the advertising firm of McKinney & Silver.
The campus will also eventually include residential and commercial properties such as restaurants. The American Tobacco property sits across the street from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
