WRAL & DTVPlus Tout Digital at NAB 2003 |
Capitol Broadcasting Company remains a champion of high-definition television and use of the digital “airways,” and in keeping with that role, WRAL-TV and DTV Plus are participating in the National Association of Broadcasters Annual Convention. Running April 5-10, 2003, in Las Vegas, the convention is known as the world’s largest electronic media show.
DTV Plus Vice President & General Manager Sam Matheny participated in a DTV seminar geared to regulators and broadcasters from Latin America on Monday, April 7. He spoke as part of the New Business Opportunities & Effective Business Models segment on the topic of Internet Content Delivery and Datacasting. He also demonstrated datacasting applications. Datacasting takes advantage of the digital broadband provided for high-definition and digital television to also deliver data.
WRAL-TV and its digital counterpart, WRAL-DT, are continuously demonstrating their digital television product on the convention floor during the six-day event. WRAL-TV Post Production Supervisor Steve Elizondo put together the piece, “This is Digital Television,” a ten-minute compilation edit highlighting the station’s most recent high-definition work in news, special and documentaries. The piece also includes footage demonstrating WRAL’s use of multi-casting with the WRAL NewsChannel and the WRAL WeatherChannel.
Ever a proponent of digital television and its multiple uses, CBC and its subsidiaries are considered champions of the industry. CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon received the Digital Television Pioneer Award at the NAB convention in 1999. WRAL-TV was granted the first high-definition TV experimental license in 1996, and in July of that year, WRAL-HD, Channel 32, signed on the air. The experimental station was named Broadcaster of the Year by Television Broadcast magazine in 1997. On Jan. 28, 2001, WRAL became the world’s first high-definition TV newsgathering operation with the debut of the station’s all-digital HD newsroom.
