Capitol Broadcasting Lays Out Plans For American Tobacco Warehouse
American Tobacco Warehouse, located adjacent to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Capitol Broadcasting Company went before the Durham City Council outlining its plan to redevelop the old American Tobacco Warehouse into a $200 million dollar complex complete with office, retail and entertainment space. The addition of this complex, which is adjacent to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park would bring an additional 4,500 jobs to a economically depressed part of the downtown.
The project is contingent upon a financial commitment from the City of Durham to provide an additional 4,200 parking facilities in the area. So far, the plan has received support from members of the City Council as well as members of the County Commissioners, Downtown Durham, Inc. and other downtown supporters. According to the WRAL Online, the City Council could offer preliminary approval of the plan as early as Monday, April 3, 2000.
The Herald Sun newspaper interviewed Mr. Jim Goodmon, president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, about his plans and his commitment to the City of Durham, reviewing CBC’s prior relationship with Durham in building the new Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the Diamondview Office Building.
On Friday, March 31, the News and Observer came out with a more indepth article on the project.
