WRAL-TV Visual Design Director Shan Zhong is no stranger to hardware and recently added another statue to his awards case, a Regional Emmy. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) presented the 35th Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards in a virtual ceremony on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
Zhong won in the Graphic Arts category, a repeat win. He received the Emmy in that category in 2020 as well.
In addition to being honored for his graphic work, he receives accolades from his co-workers for his excellence and attitude as well.
“Shan is the consummate team player—always willing to jump in and support whatever team or project needs it,” said WRAL-TV Brand Director Heather Gray. “He is top of class and an expert in his professional work—with a resume filled with awards and honors.”
She continued, “Shan is recognized across the country for his design prowess, but maybe even more important: he is an outstanding, caring colleague who works hard to lift those around him. His contributions to news stories, weather graphics, design and animation are literally everywhere you look, and they all help make WRAL and CBC better!”
Zhong has been a part of some ground-breaking efforts at the station over the years, including the building of a virtual reality set in one of the WRAL studios. He created the virtual set with 3D graphics software which launched with the station’s coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Because of his excellent work, Zhong is no stranger to Emmy wins. Zhong won an Emmy for that work at the 2019 MidSouth Regional awards ceremony.
Demonstrating Gray’s description of Zhong as a “caring colleague,” his reaction when asked for comment on the award was appreciation for his co-workers.
“I’m grateful to work for a great company, and the opportunity to be creative,” said Zhong. “Thank you, CBC, WRAL, our team and my family for all your support.”
