Greg Taylor was wrongly convicted of murder in 1993, the result of a rush to judgment by police, evidence that was withheld from the jury and misleading testimony by key witnesses. In a powerful new documentary, two years in the making, WRAL-TV chronicles the flawed investigation that led to Taylor’s conviction, his 6,149 days in prison and the fight to set him free. The WRAL documentary “6,149 Days” premieres commercial free across North Carolina April 12 at 8:00 p.m.
The broadcast marks the first time in the 75-year history of Capitol Broadcasting Company that a documentary will pre-empt network, prime-time programming and be simulcast commercial-free in three different media markets across North Carolina.  In addition to WRAL-TV in Raleigh, the broadcast will air on WJZY-TV in Charlotte and WILM-TV in Wilmington.
“It is the mission of our dedicated documentary unit to tackle in-depth topics and social issues,” says Steven D. Hammel, Vice President and General Manager of WRAL-TV. “Greg Taylor’s story exposes serious flaws in our state’s criminal justice system. It is our hope that this program can be a force for positive change.”
The 90-minute documentary will be immediately followed by a half-hour live discussion at 9:30 p.m. with retired police chief Darrel Stephens of Charlotte, who has 40 years experience in police work, and state representative Rick Glazier of Fayetteville, a criminal and constitutional law professor and member of the NC Innocence Inquiry Commission, the agency responsible for getting Greg Taylor released from prison.
Viewers can submit questions via email and twitter before and during the documentary broadcast on the website, www.6149days.com, which also features a robust interactive timeline of Taylor’s case with exclusive video, photos and court documents. The site will host on-demand viewing of the entire documentary after the N.C. premiere broadcasts on April 12.
Producers will live tweeting during the premiere event. Follow @WRALdoc and join the conversation using #6149days.
