Sports Management is one of the most popular professions in the world. From the excitement of working with sports heroes to developing a team’s brand in the community, there is an endless list of exciting jobs to hold in the world of sports. On Tuesday, August 31st, the Durham Bulls will join with sports leaders from around North Carolina to teach people how they can get their dream job in sports.
The Bulls are hosting a Sports Management and Networking seminar at the Durham Bulls game against the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:05 PM. Career-minded hopefuls will have the opportunity to meet several local sports leaders, then participate in a Q&A session with them. Those local sports leaders include:
Mike Birling, Durham Bulls General Manager: Mike is in his ninth season as General Manager of the Bulls and 12th year with Capitol Broadcasting Company. He served four seasons as Assistant General Manager of the Bulls beginning in 1998. Before joining the Bulls, Birling worked for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A) of the Midwest League from 1994-1998, the last three seasons as General Manager. He was named Midwest League Executive of the Year in 1998 and International League Executive of the Year in 2003. Birling began his career in sports in 1993 as an account executive for the LaCrosse Catbirds of the Continental Basketball Association.
Brian Asbill, Wolfpack Sports Marketing General Manager: Brian oversees the operations and strategic growth of the organization, including sales development, sponsorship fulfillment, affiliate relations and the production and distribution of the statewide Wolfpack Sports Network. Brian has more than 20 years of sports marketing and sales experience, having worked in various aspects of collegiate athletics including ticketing, media relations and marketing. He joined Wolfpack Sports Marketing as an Account Executive in 1996 before moving to Director of Sales and later, Assistant General Manager. He was elevated to General Manager in 2004.
Paul V. Seiler, CEO, USA Baseball: Paul assumed the duties of Executive Director/CEO of USA Baseball full-time in January of 2000. Seiler is a 19-year veteran of the organization, beginning his career with USA Baseball in 1988. He has held a variety of positions during that time, including the Director of National Team Operations from 1997-99. In 2000, Seiler worked closely with Major League Baseball (MLB), the MLB Players Association and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to help lead Team USA to its first ever Olympic gold medal at the Sydney Games. The Trenton, N.J., native recently held an at-large position on the Executive Committee of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and is currently the second vice president of COPABE, the Pan American Baseball Confederation. Seiler was also one of two technical delegates for baseball in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Brian Maloney, General Manager, Capitol Sports Radio Group: Brian Maloney is the General Manager of Capitol Broadcasting Company’s – 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio, 620 The Buzz and 1550 ESPN Deportes. Brian’s leadership in Sports Talk Radio and marketing has gained him national attention since arriving in the Raleigh market in 1993. In 2003, Brian was selected as one of “Talk Radio’s Best General Managers” at Radio & Records’ talk radio convention in Los Angeles, California. Brian is the longest tenured General Manager in the Raleigh-Durham market and has nearly 30 years in the broadcast industry. Brian was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan with career stops in Michigan, Wyoming Texas and North Carolina.
Amanda Hollingsworth, Charlotte Chapter Director, Speedway Children’s Charities: Amanda is a seasoned cause marketer with almost a decade invested in motorsports-related fundraising. As Director of SCC’s Charlotte Chapter since 2006, she oversees all marketing, communications, event planning and grant distribution. She also serves as the main liaison with Charlotte Motor Speedway. Prior to joining SCC, Amanda spent five years as the Director of Special Events and Foundation Director for The Jeff Gordon Foundation.
