Miss North Carolina Kirstin Elrod will sing the National Anthem at the Bulls game on June 17th. |
Kirstin Marie Elrod, the reigning Miss North Carolina, and Second Runner-Up to Miss America, will sing the National Anthem on Friday, June 17, 2005, prior to the Durham Bulls 7pm game against the Louisville Bats.
Elrod will give up the title of Miss North Carolina at the upcoming pageant, to be held at Raleigh’s BTI Center June 20-25. During her reign, Elrod has appeared across the state in many venues, including schools, civic organizations, and festivals. She has spoken out about the importance of her community service platform, Counteracting Chemical and Substance Abuse, as well as other important causes, such as motivating our youth, domestic violence cessation and environmentalism.
Elrod is a native of Cary and graduate of Cary Senior High School where she was a cheerleader, member of the State Championship Cross Country Team, representative on the Student Council, and in the Students Against Drunk Driving, United Students in Action, and Key Clubs. She went to the North Carolina School of the Arts on scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in opera performance.
While at NCSA, she performed in approximately ten productions with her school as well as professional companies. Taking a professional leave of absence for a semester, she worked professionally as an actor at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire for their 2003 season. Elrod returned to school and gave a senior recital consisting of music from every major stylistic and historical period and in six languages [English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Russian], before graduating. She was recently elected to the Opera Company of North Carolina’s Advisory Board of Directors.
Elrod has won over $49,000 in scholarships through her participation in the Miss America Organization, which is the largest scholarship provider for young women in the world. The Miss America Organization made available $45 million in scholarship and tuition assistance in the last year alone. Before winning the title of Miss North Carolina 2004/5, Elrod was Miss Garner 2002, and Miss Carolina Foothills 2004. She then competed in Atlantic City for the title of Miss America, where she placed Second Runner-Up out of 52 contestants.
Following Elrod’s reign as Miss North Carolina, she is moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. She believes in the ability of film to shape culture, and hopes to grace film screens all over the world. Elrod hopes to continue to promote the Miss America and Miss North Carolina Organizations long after her reign. The role of Miss America is one of a public servant, diplomat, and role model for women everywhere. Its importance and relevance has survived since its beginning in 1921.
